A statement from Danielle Melfi, CEO of RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association, in response to the removal of IVF coverage from the final 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

Failing to include IVF coverage in the NDAA is a dishonor to our servicemembers who make extraordinary sacrifices for our freedoms. There was bipartisan support for this coverage, and its exclusion fails to advance President Trump’s call to expand IVF access. Military families have waited far too long to access the full range of medical care needed to build their families. RESOLVE will not stop fighting until every American has access to the care they need to build the family they dream of.

The Board of Directors of RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association has announced the appointment of Danielle Melfi as its new Chief Executive Officer. Melfi will assume her role on July 7, 2025, guiding the organization through a pivotal time for family building rights and access.

Danielle Melfi brings a proven record of results-driven leadership to RESOLVE. A seasoned advocate, she has successfully advanced policy changes at both the state and federal levels, including overseeing historic bipartisan increases in family-focused budgets in Wisconsin and national reduction of health care costs. As a skilled fundraiser and leader, Danielle raised tens of millions of dollars as Executive Director of the nonprofit Building Back Together and oversaw large-scale teams in her roles as Chief People Officer at the White House and Chief Program Officer at AmeriCorps. Most recently, Danielle served as a consultant for companies at the forefront of media and health care innovation, including women’s health start-up Allara Health. Danielle began her career as an organizer with deep experience centering lived experience and personal storytelling in her work, and she is committed to continuing RESOLVE’s community-focused legacy.

Danielle Melfi’s deep commitment to supporting the challenges faced by women and families, her demonstrated leadership in times of change, and her dedication to fostering inclusive, high-performing teams make her the ideal leader for RESOLVE’s next chapter,” stated Elizabeth Grill, chair of the Board of Directors. “Her track record of policy wins at both the state and federal levels, along with her proven success in raising tens of millions of dollars for mission-driven work, will be invaluable as we navigate the evolving landscape of fertility care and strengthen RESOLVE’s impact nationwide.“

I’m honored to join RESOLVE at such a pivotal moment for family building rights,” said Danielle Melfi. “Recent events have brought unprecedented attention to family building issues, reinforcing what we’ve long known: Americans across the political spectrum overwhelmingly support access to fertility care. With rising awareness, innovation, and investment in the field, we have a powerful opportunity to drive lasting change. I’m excited to partner with the RESOLVE community to harness this momentum and ensure that everyone who dreams of building a family can access the support and care they need.

Barbara Collura will conclude her remarkable 18-year tenure as President and CEO on June 30, 2025, after more than two decades of service to RESOLVE and the family building community. Under Collura’s leadership, RESOLVE significantly expanded its reach, strengthened its advocacy efforts, and became a recognized and trusted voice for millions.

“We extend our deepest appreciation to Barb for her extraordinary leadership, unwavering dedication to our mission, and success in advocating for nationwide access to care,” added Grill. “Barb has been a steadfast advocate for those facing challenges in building their families, establishing RESOLVE as the national grassroots leader in the family building movement.

Danielle Melfi joins RESOLVE at a pivotal time for family building rights, as national attention and momentum around access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) continue to grow. High-profile developments – such as the Alabama Supreme Court’s 2024 decision restricting IVF access and President Trump’s vocal support of IVF – have brought fertility care into the spotlight, raising awareness and demonstrating broad bipartisan support. Polling consistently shows strong public backing for IVF and related treatments across the political spectrum.

This increased visibility has fueled innovation and investment in the fertility sector, with advances in science expanding treatment options alongside new startups addressing cost, access, and care gaps. Employers are also responding, with both corporations and the federal government adding fertility benefits to attract and retain talent, expanding coverage to millions of workers.

As the nation’s oldest and leading patient advocacy organization for the infertility and family building community, RESOLVE is at the frontlines in the fight to protect and expand fertility care to all those who need it, and under Danielle’s leadership, RESOLVE will capitalize on this moment of increased awareness and political engagement to expand access to reduce the financial burden of fertility treatment, and protect everyone’s right to build a family.

From RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association

RESOLVE is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Congressman Gerry Connolly. RESOLVE is grateful for Congressman Gerry Connolly and his support of the family building community. At a time when access to family building options like IVF was under threat, Congressman Connolly emerged as a powerful advocate for the rights of all Americans to build their families with dignity and support.

His invitation to RESOLVE President and CEO Barbara Collura to attend the 2024 State of the Union Address was more than a gesture—it was a bold statement of solidarity with the millions of individuals and couples navigating the challenges of infertility.

By elevating the voices of those affected and championing meaningful legislation, Congressman Connolly has shown what true allyship looks like.

Thank you, Congressman Connolly, for standing with us—and for standing up for the future of family building in America. We mourn with his family, friends, colleagues, and constituents.

RESOLVE is closely following the developments in Palm Springs.

We have followed the news reports that a suspect has been identified and that there is no ongoing threat to fertility clinics. While this news brings some comfort, we know that the fear and uncertainty of this moment have deeply affected many in our community.

At RESOLVE, we often ask you to raise your voice when our rights to build a family are under threat. But when the threat turns to violence, we need to focus on care and connection. In times like these, what matters most is holding each other close, listening with empathy, and showing up with love and support.

Our staff and volunteer leadership are actively working on ways to provide additional support in the days ahead. If you are a support group leader, please know we will be reaching out to you soon – you are a vital source of strength and connection to our community.

And if you are feeling overwhelmed or in need of emotional support, please don’t hesitate to reach out to a local mental health provider. If you are in crisis, the national mental health hotline is available 24/7 at 988. You are not alone. We are here. And we will get through this – together.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: PRESS STATEMENT CONTACT: rebecca.flick@resolve.org

Barbara Collura, President and CEO of RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association, issued this statement:

While there is much yet to learn, it is clear that the car bombing of the American Reproductive Center in Palm Springs, CA was an intentional and heinous act of violence. One individual lost their life, at least four are injured, and the local fire department has confirmed extensive damage to the facility and neighboring buildings. We are relieved to learn that no patients or staff were injured and that the embryos and gametes (sperm and egg) stored within the clinic, as well as the laboratory, are reported to be safe.

Akil Davis, the FBI official in charge of the investigation called it “an intentional act of terrorism” and confirmed that the target of the bombing was the fertility clinic itself. We are heartbroken that someone would commit violence against, what Mayor Pro Tem Naomi Soto of Palm Springs called, “a building where hope lives.”

Those in the family building community, and the dedicated healthcare professionals who serve them, deserve to receive and provide care in peace and safety. Experiencing infertility and going through the IVF process are challenging experiences for anyone to face. It is imperative that those who need access to IVF medical treatment, no matter where they live, can access that care without fear.

We look to the FBI and other law enforcement to ensure that those responsible for this unconscionable act will be identified and brought to justice.

The support and safety of our community, physically and emotionally, is RESOLVE’s utmost priority.

RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association (RESOLVE) will recognize National Infertility Awareness Week®, (NIAW) April 20 through April 26, 2025. The movement, started by RESOLVE in 1989, brings together millions of Americans who want to remove the stigmas and barriers that stand in the way of building families. #AllinFertility, our theme for this year, is a message that talks about how community, support, and advocacy help create solutions for the real problems that 1 in 6 people with infertility often face.

RESOLVE knows first-hand that when people and companies are committed to this cause and address the barriers to building families such as lack of access to equitable medical care and emotional support, real change happens. We need to use this awareness moment to shine a light on the people and the companies who are making a difference and changing lives. NIAW is a week-long opportunity to say to yourself ‘What can I do to help’?” said Barbara Collura, RESOLVE’s President/CEO. “In today’s political climate, our stories are more important than ever.

February 10, 2025 — Washington DC – Barbara Collura, CEO, RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association and Sean Tipton, Chief Advocacy and Policy Officer, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the leading organization for professionals in the field, strongly reject the financial cuts imposed on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on February 7, 2025.

Medical research prolongs life, improves the quality of life and allows providers to bring new treatments that help people build their families. The pernicious plan would have a devastating impact on the universities that employ the bulk of our country’s biomedical researchers. Despite the fact that research in reproductive health has a history of being targeted by politicians, our country leads the world in pioneering medical research because we equip smart, hard-working scientists with laboratories and infrastructure to innovate and solve problems. To slash ‘indirect costs’ that accompany research grants that pay for things, including buildings, heat, and water, will starve the field of its ability to promote and preserve health.

We have a simple question for the American people: do you want your government to take a wrecking ball to research science? Think about how this might impact you or your family. If your child gets diagnosed with cancer that will impair their ability to have children, do you want them to have access to innovative treatments that have been developed and researched by the best biomedical research system in the world, or do you want to rely on the same treatments we have had for last fifty years?

We call for an immediate reversal of this misguided policy and urge all Americans to contact President Trump and Congress and demand just that.

Since the last NIAW, we have seen far too many states introduce legislation that threatens the legality and availability of IVF. Our stories are more important than ever. This year, people from coast to coast who struggle to build a family and those who support them will discover ways to ‘leave their mark’. Alabamians, devastated by the State Supreme Court’s recent decision, appeal to lawmakers to push for legislation to safeguard the right to build families through healthcare

FEB. 28, 2024 – MONTGOMERY, AL – Hundreds of people who have undergone, are in the midst of, or need IVF, fertility doctors and advocates for family-building gathered at the Alabama State House today as part of ongoing efforts to save access to in-vitro fertilization (IVF) in Alabama following the recent State Supreme Court ruling conferring personhood status on embryos. Those gathered at the State House today urged Alabama lawmakers to quickly enact legislation to protect access to IVF and make it possible for fertility clinics to resume care immediately to help would-be parents build their families.

Since the February 16 ruling, fertility clinics across the state have announced that they have suspended IVF treatment, leaving thousands of distraught families with little clarity on how they will continue their family-building journeys. At least one embryo-shipping company has stopped their services of transferring embryos out of Alabama. This ruling is crushing for the one in six people impacted by infertility, who may need IVF to build their families, and threatens the existence of fertility care within the state.

“This issue is personal to me. As a mother-to-be because of IVF currently expecting my second baby, I can’t imagine having to leave the state of Alabama to receive IVF care,” said Corinn O’Brien, of the Fight for Alabama Families Coalition. “IVF has been a miracle in my life, and I am devastated for the families across Alabama whose fertility treatments are on hold. We are here today to encourage the Alabama legislature to take quick and urgent action for Alabama families that meaningfully protects both IVF patients and clinics.”

“The women and families of Alabama deserve full access to advanced fertility treatments,” said Barbara Collura, President of RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association, which has been working to protect access to IVF across the country and is part of the Fight for Alabama Families Coalition. “Infertility is devastating for people who just want a child — they deserve all healthcare options, including IVF, to make their dream a reality. We call on the Alabama legislature to enact a swift and meaningful solution.”

“As an infertility physician I am used to difficult conversations, but these last two weeks have been absolutely heartbreaking,” said Dr. Mamie McLean, of Alabama Fertility Specialists in Homewood, Alabama. “I have called dozens of patients in the middle of fertility treatments, including women who were scheduled for embryo transfers, and told them that we cannot move forward with treatment at this juncture. I have cried with patients who want nothing more than a baby, and, as their physician, I am unable to provide the fertility treatments that they desperately need. We are calling on the legislature to allow us to provide support for the full scope of fertility care to our citizens within our beautiful state.”

“My practice has served the women and families of Alabama for over 20 years and has helped bring thousands of babies into the world,” said Dr. Beth Malizia, a specialist in infertility and reproductive surgery. “It is our honor to help our patients become parents, and it has been terrible to have our most successful treatment taken from us. We are calling on the Alabama legislature to provide full access to IVF care.”

Access to IVF has broad support across the country. According to a recent nationwide survey conducted by Kellyanne Conway, 85 percent of all respondents, including 86 percent of women, support increasing access to fertility-related care and services. Moreover, 86 percent of all respondents favor increasing access to IVF.

It is our honor to help our patients become parents, and it has been terrible to have our most successful treatment taken from us,” said Dr. Beth Malizia, a specialist in infertility and reproductive surgery.

Access to IVF has broad support across the country. According to a recent nationwide survey, 85 percent of all respondents, including 86 percent of women, support increasing access to fertility-related care and services. Moreover, 86 percent of all respondents favor increasing access to IVF.

RESOLVE will continue to be on the front lines protecting access to IVF and ensuring people in Alabama and across the country have family-building options,” added Collura.
