Clinical trials are the foundation of medical advancements. They set the stage for the future of medicine, promoting hope throughout the infertility community. However, a lack of diversity, most notably in terms of racial identity, among research participants can weaken a clinical trial’s effectiveness.

In this episode of Kitchen Table Conversations, Barbara Collura, RESOLVE President and CEO introduces the discussion about the importance of including diverse people, specifically people of color, in clinical trials. Dr. Michael Thomas, MD, President of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), and Evan Sussman, CEO of Granata Bio, share their expert opinions and insight regarding why diverse representation in clinical trials is critical for supporting equitable access and addressing health disparities – especially for the infertility community.

Tune in to the full episode to hear more about why diverse representation in clinical trials is so important and what kind of consequences members of minority communities can face when diversity is not prioritized.

When infertility finds us, many times the woman or carrying partner, is the focus of the journey, as her body is going through most of the physical and medical procedures necessary for conception. However, the impact on the partner – especially when dealing with male factor infertility – is also profound and deeply painful, yet rarely spoken of.

In this episode of Kitchen Table Conversations, Johannes Soulages, PhD, RESOLVE support group leader for men who’s dealt with male factor infertility, pregnancy loss, and multiple rounds of IVF, and Anna Hornbostel, M.A., LMFT, a RESOLVE advocate and licensed marriage and family therapist who resolved childless with her husband after unsuccessful IVFs and a disrupted adoption, share their experiences with male factor infertility – from the surprising emotions and lack of support and awareness, to how they supported both their partners and themselves as they walked through this journey.

Listen to the full episode to hear more about the challenges many men face in seeking support, the impact infertility and pregnancy loss can have on partners, and why it’s so important to find the personal help you need, in order to best support your partner and protect your relationship.

A recent journal article stated that 1 in 4 women physicians deals with infertility – a shocking statistic that prompted this conversation around the need for openness, access, and support for females in, and entering, the healthcare field.

In this episode, Drs. Eliza Chin, MD, MPH, with the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA), and Erica Kaye, MD, MPH, join RESOLVE’s President and CEO, Barb Collura to discuss their experiences and passion around advocating for fertility insurance coverage at work in the medical and health field, the importance of discussing reproductive identity and planning with future medical professionals, and how vital community support is for female physicians walking through this challenge – especially in light of dealing with an extremely personal issue in a professional setting.

Medical professionals are first and foremost focused on bringing healing and comfort to their patients, so many times dealing with their own grief around infertility, verbalizing their story, and prioritizing their healing can seem secondary or unimportant in relation to their patients’ varying situations. In helping physicians to name their grief and prioritize their healing, while providing resources to advocate for insurance coverage at their places of work and educating them on options for fertility planning, these women are helping to change the norm for how women physicians manage their own infertility journeys.

Watch the full episode to learn more about this prevalent issue and steps everyone can take to bring awareness and change the culture.

When a patient hears the words, “You have cancer,” most times, and rightly so, survival at any cost is the biggest focus. However, what many doctors fail to inform patients is that one of those costs is their fertility. And there are fertility preservation actions they must take immediately if they ever want to have children of their own.

In this episode of Kitchen Table Conversations, Joyce Reinecke – cancer survivor, mother, and Executive Director for the Alliance for Fertility Preservation – joins RESOLVE’s President and CEO, Barb Collura to discuss how her story and experience with infertility through cancer treatments brought her to a place of advocacy and connection for others walking through a similar season.

For 15 years Joyce has worked to help bring about change for men and women walking through a cancer diagnosis and their treatment options for fertility preservation – getting patients better information around fertility preservation options immediately upon their diagnosis, building increased fertility programs embedded in cancer centers, and survivorship initiatives. Changes in technology have also made it more possible to complete IVF cycles much more quickly than what was previously possible.

However, much remains to be done. In 2022, AFP received the Hope award from RESOLVE for their advocacy efforts in demanding insurance coverage for sperm banking, egg banking, embryo banking, and tissue banking – things cancer patients need in an urgent manner before they start any potentially sterilizing treatment. Infertility is a side effect of cancer treatments, and therefore should be covered just like any other side effect treatment such as anti-nausea meds or prosthetics.

Watch the full episode to learn more about Joyce’s story, work, and hope for the future for cancer patients who have yet to grow their families.
